A Digital Interaction Pathway to Self-Create One's Environment
A multisensory environment that comprehensively meets the needs of people with disabilities, with particular attention to the sensory profiles of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, who often exhibit hyper- or hypo-sensory sensitivity and sometimes debilitating sensory issues.
Co-design
A project that arises not only from the integrated design between architecture, psychotherapy, and technological development, but also from the participation of the associations ANGSA and ANFFAS, and the individuals who will personally use this space. The testimonials from high-functioning individuals with autism and Asperger’s syndrome who attend the autism center in Novara have been truly valuable in fully understanding the users’ needs and providing the opportunity to experience pleasant and relaxing moments in an appropriate environment, customized according to each individual’s requirements.
The Sensory Space
The room, approximately 35 square meters in size, offers a digital interaction pathway through which users can self-create their environment by selecting colors, lights, intensity and frequency, images and videos, sounds, music and vibrations, aromas, and tactile and gustatory stimulations, among others.
Upon entering, an optical fiber curtain creates a semi-transparent filter, allowing users to view the sensory space, become familiar with it, and choose when and in which reality to enter. Next to the entrance,
Soft curtains conceal new discovery islands for fun and experimentation: a sound niche with soft shapes, where one can lie down and isolate while listening to their favorite music, combined with a foot massage through controlled airflow; a contrasting, sharp-edged niche for experimenting with aromas, tastes, and tactile stimulations; and a mirror for self-reflection and spatial expansion.
In every area, lighting—one of the most critical aspects from a sensory perspective—can always be customized by choosing colors, intensity, and frequency. The same applies to music, with options to adjust melody, equalization, volume, and vibrations. Each type of stimulation can be activated or deactivated within a flexible system that makes space for the individual as the unique subject of the experience.
